Talk about going out in style.
While the overall quality of Sunday night’s “Downton Abbey” Season 4 finale is still in question (The Daily Beast
called it “the depressing demise of a once-great show”), fashion fans
and critics alike can agree the costumes killed it in the best way
possible.
The episode proved especially pleasant for lovers of pretty things.
Pastels, feathers and tiaras galore came courtesy of Caroline McCall,
the series’ lead costume designer, who won the honor for Outstanding
Period/Fantasy on Saturday at the 16th annual Costume Designers Guild
Awards.
Alert: no spoilers here. Just our favorite looks from the 90-minute episode’s seemingly endless cycle of outfit changes.
Lighten up, it’s the ’20s!
The
young ladies of “Downton” kissed corsets goodbye a long time ago, but
in the season finale, it was nice to see those loose, boyish flapper
silhouettes offset by feminine colors like dusty rose and power blue.
“Hatter” up
From
Lady Edith and Martha Levinson’s colorful, posh toppers to their staff
members’ muted styles, headgear got a lot of airtime.
Crowing achievements
Who
is Freda and what is her relationship with the prince? It’s hard to
tell. Really, we’re more focused on the tiara, which any bridezilla
would die for.
Retro-casual
Who needs beads and finger waves? Madeleine is stunning in this simple white blouse and ivory sun hat.
“Downton” does… Derek Lam?
Color drama
We
love a good visual foil. House darling Rose got to wear a pretty pink
dress. Meanwhile, poor Lady Edith got shafted (yet again) with this
glamorous shade of khaki.
Life’s a ball
Rose’s ravishing red ball gown added some much-needed volume to her narrow waist repertoire.
Or is it a beach?
Because Daisy looked damn good in her pink day dress.
A courtly coming out
Rose couldn’t have picked a prettier dress “coming out” for her
moment with the King George, Queen Mary and Prince of Wales at
Buckingham Palace. And her and Cora’s feathered headpieces could have
been straight out of “Cinderella.”
