20-year-old Gill has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for punching a 40-year-old man to death.

Gill, a convicted robber punched Mr Young for challenging his friend for riding his bike on the pavement, which led to him hitting his head on the pavement.

Mr Young who suffered from Asperger’s and had the mental age of a 14-year-old in the head, however, died the next.

Gill who was captured on CCTV pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Lekki International Airport project on course – Fashola

Lagos – Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State said on Tuesday night that the state government had not jettisoned its plan to build an international airport in Lekki area of the state.

Fashola told State House correspondents in Lagos that the delay in actual take-off of the project did not mean it had been abandoned.

He said that the state government had already done all the preparatory work on the project and was engaging the right investors to translate it to fruition.

According to him, what the government plans to build is an international airport that will live to its true name and comply with the best aviation standards.

“There are airports and there are airports. What we think Lagos deserves is a truly international airport that can compete globally. And those are not the kinds of airports that government would build and run.

“We have acquired the land for the project, government is fencing the land. We are doing the financial and the technical study of the project.

“We already know what it will look like because we have already done the concept design. We have in fact done all the preparatory work.

Ban Ki-Moon condemns Yobe students’ killings

Abuja – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has strongly condemned the brutal killing of students at the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, in Yobe.

The condemnation is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in New York.

It expressed sincere condolences to the bereaved families and hoped that the perpetrators would be “swiftly brought to justice.

“The secretary-general is deeply concerned about the increasing frequency and brutality of attacks against educational institutions in the north of the country.

“He reiterates that no objective can justify such violence,” the statement said.

On Tuesday, President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the killings, calling them “heinous, brutal and mindless”.

Yobe is one of three north eastern states along with Borno and Adamawa put under emergency rule last May by President Jonathan as the military continues to combat the insurgency in the area. (NAN)

Kanye West ticket slump leads to big price cuts

Ticket sales for the second half of Kanye West’s “Yeezus” tour were so dismal, prices were slashed and freebies were given out at the last minute for shows in New Jersey and New York. 

We’re told several brokers were offering massively discounted tickets — and even free ones — for shows at the Prudential Center last week and for Sunday’s Nassau Coliseum gig, after only half of tickets for the Prudential Center show were sold, while just a third of the tickets were sold for Sunday’s Nassau show.

“He’d already been in the area four times,” said one music insider. “Why would fans go out [again]?” 

West, in January, announced nine additional East Coast concert dates after he’d already performed 30 dates across the US, including concerts at the Barclays Center and MSG. 

Kendrick Lamar and A Tribe Called Quest toured with West as supporting acts during the earlier dates. 

A West rep would not comment on ticket sales, but said Sunday’s performance was “one of the more energetic crowds I’ve seen on this tour and definitely a great performance from Kanye.”

Ondo Speaker Dies After Fighting Disease – Source

The Speaker of the Ondo state House of Assembly, Samuel Adesina has died on Monday night at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos, sources in the state parliament said.

The Ondo State governor's spokesperson Eni Akinsola, however, could not confirm the death of the speaker.

Adesina was fighting cancer. His absence from the House of Assembly has been a source of worry for over three months. 

It was previously reported that Adesina could no longer perform his duties as he was moving about to seek medical attention, especially from the spiritualists.

Adesina is the first Speaker of the Ondo state House of Assembly to have spent three years in that position without being impeached.

He is also the first legislator voted three consecutive times by his people to represent them in the state Assembly.

Adesina was a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before he decamped to the Labour Party (LP) on April 8, 2010 to pave way for his emergence as Speaker of the Assembly

Despite the dramatic impact, Mr Weber suffered only a scratch to his face from the flying glass and managed to compose himself and land the plane safely.

CBN Committed To Sustaining Sanusi's Achievements – Sarah Alade

The acting head of the Central Bank of Nigeria Sarah Alade reassured investors that the removal of the former governor Lamido Sanusi would not change policy to strengthen the economy.

Sanusi was suspended by the President Goodluck last Thursday over allegations of misconduct. He appointed Alade, the CBN's most senior deputy governor.

Alade said on Monday that the changes at the bank "will not affect the monetary policy direction and pursuit of the bank's primary mandate of maintaining price and financial system stability."

Markets in Nigeria reacted negatively to Sanusi's removal, with the naira falling sharply against the US dollar, while most stocks in the banking sector also dipped.

Credit ratings agency Fitch warned in a note that if the sharp sell-off of currency continued, inflationary pressure would increase, raising the possibility of a rise in interest rates next month.

Alade said in an advertisement published in Nigerian newspapers that the CBN had the capacity to meet the demands of foreign exchange users and there were no plans to devalue the currency.

"With the current level of reserves at seven months of imports cover as at end-December 2013, the bank's ability to intervene in the foreign exchange market is not in doubt," she said.

She also promised to sustain single figures inflation and stable exchange rate.

"The bank is committed to sustaining these achievements through the use of appropriate policy tools to ensure price and financial system stability," she said.

Sanusi has rejected the claims against him, believing he was removed for highlighting alleged widespread graft in the oil and gas sector.

President Jonathan told reporters in Abuja on Monday that Sanusi was still the governor of the CBN and that he "could come back tomorrow to continue his work because the issues raised are issues that the board of (the) CBN with the Financial Reporting Council will deal with."
